LILLY’S/ALLISON’S GARDEN

PROFILE

I want to work at the garden because:

Two of my personal goals for working at the Dallas Youth Garden this summer are:

  1. To work on time management skills and following a work schedule.

  2. Understanding what its like to have a job and responsibilities with that job.

Two things I hope to learn from working at the Dallas Youth Garden are:

  1. I have recently become interested in gardening and making meals with homegrown veggies and fruit. I have experience with cooking, but I don’t really know much about gardening, so I hope working at the garden gives me skills to be able to take care of my own garden.

  2. I also hope to learn about working, like teamwork, and work ethic.

I think my biggest challenge will be: arriving on time

My favorite vegetable or fruit is: strawberries and tomatoes

I hope to contribute this to the garden this year: I hope that my presence makes people happy and that I am helpful to my coworkers.

GARDEN LOG

  • Week 1 - had my first day and group weeded onions

  • Week 2 - picked my first zuchini ever and first ever veggie picked at the garden

  • Week 3 - I have been trying to get the hang of how much i should water all my plants and i think im starting to get the hang of it.

  • Week 4 - This week i really started to notice my sunflower plants getting big, about to chest height.

  • Week 5 - My Zinnias have really started to take off so I picked 2 bouqets

  • Week 6 - Last week i could just barely see a beans starting to grow on the vine but now im picking beans like crazy! Beans are my favorite to pick now.

  • Week 7 - I started noticing bugs on my zuchini and squash plants, Dean said to check for eggs under leaves and when i did there were so many.

  • Week 8 - My cabbages are big enough to pick now, ive never tried cabbage but if i pick a good one i might.

  • Week 9 - After the bugs took over my summer squash and zuchini, my plants have really slowed down. I only pick maybe one or the other once a week.

  • Week 10 - Onions and carrots are ready to pick, im taking a onion home to make speggeti

  • Week 11 - Pumpkins are ready to pick, i dont really have that many though.

Final Thoughts:

My favorite garden vegetable was:
Green beans
Because:
They grow in abundance and are crunchy and sweet.
I harvested 79.60 pounds of produce from my garden.
My favorite job was:
Watering
My least favorite job was:
Weeding
I could have done better at:
Updating my website on time.
I did the best I could doing:
Watering, i really enjoyed watering but it took me a little while to get the hang of it.
The two things I learned most at the garden this year were:
1.
After a week or two i started noticing all of the different bugs and which ones are good and bad for the garden.
2.
After a couple weeks i was able to get the hang of watering my crops except i dont think i ever really got the hang of summer squash.

GARDEN PROJECTS

1.When are zinnias ready to pick?

Question/Problem(s) Proposed: Why have some of my zinnias been dying fast in the vase but others last about 2 weeks?

Answer(s) I found: Zinnias are alike fruit and veggies in that they have a sort of “ripeness” stage when the stalks are fully sturdy and ready to harvest.

2. Recipe

Name: Grandmas speggeti

Vegetable Used: Onions, Bell peppers

Ingredients: Onions, Bell peppers, Crushed tomatoes, Italian sausage, garlic, oregano, basil, salt, pepper, onion powder, 1 pound of pasta.

Steps to Make it: First sautee veggies and set aside. Toss in italian sausage to the same pan used to cook veggies and brown the meat. Once the mean is done add back in your veggies and crush in your tomatoes. season well and let sit for at least an hour to let the ingrediants marry. Boil pasta and combine sauce to pasta.

Opinion: Very yummy and easy recipe to make, i also really liked how much leftovers you get from this dish.

3. extra project: Tomato suckers?

Problem: My tomato plants are going just crazy and its to overwhelming, how can i tame them a little bit?

Solution: Trim tomato suckers as early as you spot them, depending on if your tomato plant is determinate or indeterminate your gonna wanna trim your plant a special way.

Test/Activity: I learned through my research how i can properly take care of my future tomato plants for and abundant and yummy yeild.
