JORDYN’S GARDEN

PROFILE

I want to work at the garden because: I want college resume padding as well as work experience for other jobs.

Two of my personal goals for working at the Dallas Youth Garden this summer are:

1. Get a good yield.

2. Further my gardening knowledge.

Two things I hope to learn from working at the Dallas Youth Garden are:

1. Job skills such as adaptability, project management, teamwork, etc.

2. How to grow tomatoes.

I think my biggest challenge will be:

Learning how to adapt to a regular working schedule.

My favorite vegetable or fruit is:

Potatoe.

I hope to contribute this to the garden this year:

By assisting others and promoting a positive atmosphere in the work place.

Final Thoughts:

My favorite garden vegetable was: Zucchini
Because: I liked when they would grow to the size of a baseball bat. I never did it on purpose, but it sometimes happend.
I harvested __302.3___ pounds of produce from my garden.
My favorite job was:
Picking
My least favorite job was: Watering (I would get soaked until Dean fixed my hose so now it only made my socks wet)
I could have done better at: Weeding
I did the best I could during: Times where I could help other gardeners.
The two things I learned most at the garden this year were:
1. Mild code switching
2.
Lettuce doesn’t grow like cabbage

GARDEN PROJECTS

1. Flower Picking.

Why do we pick flowers off of young tomatoes and squash?

We remove flowers from our young transplants because it helps guide the plants into developing their root system first. Before they start to develop their flowers and fruit, resulting in the plant getting more nutrients from the soil, and making it sturdier for harsh conditions such as wind. Potentially leading to a better produce.

How long should we pick the flowers off?

The plant should be healthy and well established before allowing it to flower and later fruit.

2. Recipe

Name: Zucchini Crumb Cake

Vegetable Used: Zucchini

Ingredients: Flour, Dark Brown Sugar, Cinnamon, Unsalted Butter, Baking Powder, Baking Soda, Nutmeg, Granulated Sugar, 1 Egg At Room Temp, Vanilla Extract, Shredded Zucchini, Vanilla Icing Made With Powdered Sugar, Milk, Vanilla Extract.

Steps to Make it:

Preheat Oven To 350 And Grease A 8 Inch Baking Dish.

Make The Crumb Topping: Mix Flour, Brown Sugar, And Cinnamon Together In A Bowl.

For The Cake: Wisk Flour, Baking Powder, Baking Soda, Salt, Cinnamon, And Nutmeg In A Bowl. Wisk Melted Butter Cooled Slightly, Brown Sugar, Regular Sugar, Egg, And Vanilla In A Bowl. Add The Shredded Zucchini Then Pour The Wet Into The Dry And Stir Untill Combined. Add To Prepared Dish And Then Add Crumble Topping. Bake For 40 Minutes Or Untill A Toothpick Comes Out Clean. Make Icing And Pour Over The Hot Cake. Wait Untill The Icing Hardens And Serve.

Opinion: The Cake Was Good. It Was A Bit Too Sweet For My Tastes, So I Would Definitely Spread Less Icing. My Family Enjoyed It. The Cake Tasted Almost Like A Pumpkin Bread. The Top Crumble Was Much Sweeter And Could Be Too Much At Times If You Dont Enjoy Very Sweet Things. Besides All The Dishes, It Was Very Easy To Make And A Good Treat.

Project 3: What Does The Food Bank Do?

The Dallas Food Bank Provide Food And Other Items To People Who Can Not Get It For Themselves.

Activity: Me Emma And Others Visted The Food Bank For A Tour. We Were Shown How The Bank Works And Where The Food Is Stored. We Learned How They Get The Food And How It’s Given Out.

Results: I Found It Interesting How The Bank Works And How It Helps Our Comunity Like The Resource Center, And I Would Like To Volunteer In The Future
